Lunch in the medina followed by visits to artisan souks (coppersmiths, weavers, potters, woodcarvers). Explore Nejjarine Square and woodworking museum in a restored caravanserai. In the afternoon, tour Fes el-Jedid, including the Royal Palace (exterior only) and Mellah (Jewish Quarter). Return to riad before dinner.
Early departure from Fes heading south via the Middle Atlas. First stop: Ifrane, with Alpine-style architecture and a stone lion statue. Next, Azrou cedar forest to see Barbary macaques. Continue to Midelt for lunch. Afternoon drive follows the Ziz Valley with photo stops in palm groves and mountain passes. Enter Tafilalte oasis and reach Merzouga by late afternoon. Begin camel trek into Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Arrive at desert camp for dinner, Berber music, and overnight stay under the stars. Camp includes beds, toilets, and basic washing facilities.
Early wake-up to watch the Sahara sunrise, followed by breakfast at camp. Depart westward with first stop in Rissani historic capital of Tafilalet and birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty. Visit the traditional market (busiest on Tue/Thu/Sun) for local goods and livestock trading.
Continue to Erfoud, known for dates and fossils. Visit a marble workshop to see fossil crafting from ancient marine deposits. Drive through palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad en route to Todra Gorges 300 m high limestone walls, 10 m wide in places. Walk through the gorge; lunch at local restaurant.
Afternoon drive to Dades Valley, known for rock formations (“monkey fingers”) and kasbahs. Stop at viewpoints including the winding road overlook. Arrive late afternoon at hotel in Boumalne Dades. Optional walk nearby; dinner and overnight at hotel.
After breakfast, depart for Marrakech. First stop: Kelaat M’Gouna in the Valley of Roses known for May’s Rose Festival and rose product production. Visit workshops for rose water and cosmetics. Continue through Skoura’s palm groves, visiting Kasbah Amridil (featured on Moroccan currency).
Next, arrive in Ouarzazate (“Hollywood of Africa”). Optional visit to film studios (entry not included) with sets from major productions. Then visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar with mud-brick buildings and historic trading significance. Walk through the village and climb for panoramic views.
After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, cross the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Stop at viewpoints along the winding road. Arrive in Marrakech by early evening. After hotel/riad check-in, optional walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa for evening activity.
After breakfast, meet your local guide for a full-day tour of Marrakech. Visit Bahia Palace (19th century), featuring detailed woodwork and quiet courtyards. Continue to the Saadian Tombs, rediscovered in 1917, with decorative tilework and carvings. Explore the Ben Youssef Quranic School once the largest Islamic college in North Africa, now preserved for visitors.
Walk through the medina’s souks Morocco’s largest traditional market observing artisans and shopping for crafts. Lunch near Jemaa el-Fnaa square, active with performers and vendors. In the afternoon, view the Koutoubia Mosque exterior (77 m minaret) and its gardens. End with Majorelle Garden, a plant-filled retreat with Berber Museum, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.
Return to your accommodation. Optional evening return to Jemaa el-Fnaa. Dinner at riad or recommended local restaurants.
